422 spring 2011 casey intro

Me @ the Turkey Tfrot in Oceanside
Hello, my name is Casey Lynn.  I was born in Saginaw, Michigan and lived there throughout my adolescent years.  I went to public school for kindergarten but spent the rest of my school years in private Lutheran schools and (barely) graduated from Michigan Lutheran Seminary.  I attended one semester of college and quickly realized that I was not ready for college but I wanted to get away from home and do something productive with my life.  I was young and ready to take on the world, so I decided to join the United States Marine Corps.  This turned out to be an excellent decision for me both mentally and physically.  I spent 9 successful years and 3 months on active duty picking up the rank of E-6/ Staff Sargent in 7 years and thoroughly enjoyed my military career.  When the war in Iraq broke out, I basically had to make the hardest, personal decision between my career and my kids.  Since my goal in life is to be the best mom I can be, I chose to get out of the Marines and I haven’t looked back since.  I was born to be a mom (I have a 15 year old son and a 7 year old daughter  J) and with my Marine Corps tactics and my positive, Christian attitude, I would have to say, I am on track.  I lived a majority of my adult life in North Carolina with a year stint back in Michigan, 10 months in Alabama, and a few shorts stints in South Carolina, Virginia, & Louisiana, moving to California a little over 3 years ago.   While I was on active duty, I received my bachelors’ degree in Psychology from Campbell University.  Upon exiting my military career, I then completed a lateral entry program and received my Special Educational K-12 Teaching License from East Carolina University.  I teach at a Non-public school in San Marcos (The Country School owned and operated by TERI Inc.) and I am currently enrolled in CSUSM to clear my California License.
Technology, well let’s just say, I am extremely excited to be in this class (my students and my son alike) but my techy mind and lack of skills will be challenged throughout this course.  I can vividly remember the day my dad bought home our very 1st, very expensive computer and us 5 kids just sat and watched in awe of this machine in front of us.  I just didn’t grow up with the exposure to technology like kids have today.  I think technology is and will continue to be an awesome tool when used correctly.  I am very thankful God gave me my son to help me develop these skills but my leadership ego would like to catch up in this department.  A generous person donated Mac Computers to our school last year so this course will be very beneficial.  I even recommended to my principal to have all our teachers take the courseJ.
I feel that the College of Education mission statement supports my philosophy as an educator as well as all aspects of my life.  This is one of the reasons I ended up in the special education field.  I love teaching and I want to ensure that every student I come in contact with has a positive educational experience since learning is a life-long process.  I understand that all students come from different backgrounds and have different learning styles.  I focus on the positive and hone in on each students’ strengths.  I am huge supporter of collaborative learning because we can all learn something from each other and I surely didn’t make it this far in life by myself.
